Background of the Study
Network redundancy is a critical component of modern campus networks, especially in institutions like Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, where continuous access to educational and administrative resources is required. Redundancy techniques involve the implementation of backup systems or alternate paths that ensure service availability even in the event of network failures (Olatunde et al., 2023). The growing reliance on networked resources, coupled with increasing demands for seamless connectivity, makes it imperative to have redundancy techniques in place to avoid significant disruptions caused by network failures.
There are several approaches to network redundancy, including the use of multiple network links, redundant hardware, and failover mechanisms. These techniques are designed to improve network resilience, increase uptime, and ensure uninterrupted access to critical services such as e-learning platforms, email systems, and online databases (Adamu et al., 2024). This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of network redundancy techniques implemented at Federal University, Wukari, and provide recommendations for improving network reliability and performance.
The goal is to enhance the university’s network infrastructure, ensuring that it can effectively support its growing user base without significant downtime.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Wukari, experiences frequent network disruptions and downtime due to the lack of sufficient redundancy in its network infrastructure. These interruptions affect the availability of online learning resources, administrative functions, and communication channels. The absence of effective redundancy mechanisms increases the vulnerability of the network to failures, hindering the university’s ability to provide continuous service to its users.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the current network redundancy techniques in place at Federal University, Wukari.
To evaluate the effectiveness of these redundancy techniques in reducing network downtime and improving service availability.
To propose enhanced redundancy strategies that will improve network reliability at the university.
Research Questions
What network redundancy techniques are currently implemented at Federal University, Wukari?
How effective are the existing redundancy techniques in minimizing network downtime and ensuring service availability?
What improvements can be made to the network redundancy strategies to enhance network performance and reliability?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on evaluating the network redundancy techniques in place at Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State. The study will assess the existing redundancy methods and their impact on network performance and downtime reduction. Limitations may include data availability, access to network performance metrics, and the feasibility of implementing new redundancy strategies within the existing infrastructure.
Definitions of Terms
Network Redundancy: The use of duplicate systems, pathways, or components to ensure continuous service in the event of a network failure.
Failover: The process of switching to a backup system or network path when the primary system fails.
Uptime: The period during which the network or system is operational and accessible.
Redundant Hardware: Additional hardware components that are available as backups to ensure system availability.
